How To: Update Your Skincare Routine For Fall
Your body will soon respond to cooler weather from top to toe. What about fall and winter needs us to change our ways of caring for our skin?
The change in temperature, humidity and habits require new products and attention to this most significant organ of the body.
While the heat of the summer months makes us thirst for cool beverages (hopefully, mostly water), when things cool down, our skin craves moisture. Many factors contribute to this drying of the skin. Lower humidity makes less water in the air available to our skin, so we must compensate to keep it soft and dewy.
Dry winds wick away moisture and the natural barriers our skin has to prevent drying on cooler days. As we move from outdoor cold to indoor dry heat, the temperature changes can be stressful for the skin as it tries to adjust. Heavier fabrics (sweater-weather!) also pull moisture from the skin and can cause some of those itchier moments we feel. And those comforting hot showers we love? They feel lovely, but that hot water also removes the natural oils our bodies produce to soften our skin.
Get Ready For The Day!
Hydrating our skin against all these odds calls for the right products to help and an intelligent daily strategy. From wake-up to bedtime, there are times when our skin needs our attention, and we need to be ready. Let’s start with that morning shower. A scrub is a great way to cleanse and polish your skin and use it several times a week. Apply a full-body lotion right after the shower while still a little damp. Your body is ready and receptive to the moisturizing ingredients you slather on.
Keep Your Skin Healthy Outside
Before leaving the house, remember to Apply Sunscreen! While Sunscreen is often synonymous with summer, it should be used year-round, with at least an SPF 30. The sun in winter is still sending lots of UVA and UVB rays down on you, so protection every day is essential.
Use a lip balm with Hyaluronic acid to protect and prevent dry lips.
Licking dry lips only makes them worse, so stop doing that!
Let a lovely moisturizing balm do the work for you.
Time For Rest and Rejuvenation!
Before bed, cleanse your face and apply a heavier moisturizer than you used for the summer. Getting a good seven hours or more of sleep helps improve your metabolism, brainpower, and overall skin health.
Bonus Points:
Look into getting a pillowcase made of silk. It helps retain moisture in your skin while sleeping and creates less friction, helping stave off wrinkles.
Vitamin C – add a serum with C to help battle UV light and brighten and even skin tone.
Cuticle oil/Hand moisturizer – skin and nails experience more drying in cooler months and can become brittle. Find a moisturizer/cuticle oil that protects and prevents bristle dry skin.
Face mask – while in the bath, add a face mask to your tub-soaking time. A 15-20-minute mask is like a spa day for your face.
Retinol - Now is the time to add your antiaging step in your routine.
